Fun with interfaces

Via Adverblog: A Spanish advert for donating blood pulls the interface into the diegetic level of the video. Very smartly and effectively done: The progress bar doubling as vial suggests that giving blood is really as easy, smooth and everday as starting a video stream.

Playing with the interface is a proprietary technique of digital media and cannot be effectively employed in any other medium. I’ve talked about similar effects in my thesis What you click is what you get: mastering challenges by toggling the preferences in Space Quest 1, playing in a Windows interface in Space Quest 6, back-talking dialogs in John McDaid’s Unclue Buddy’s Phantom Funhouse and many more. My short article “Towards the recognition of the shell as an integral part of the digital text” offers some thoughts I had on this subject back in 1999 (Anja Rau: Towards the recognition of the shell” as PDF-download from the ACM Digital Library).
